After looking for answers to questions no immediate person I know can give to me; the google search bar is the my next goto. From googling(definition) code errors and any other random thing. I find this requires a particular skill into getting it right. So I bring you this article.

Finding filetypes

Type on the search-bar : Thing searching for(aka. Search term) : filetype

(e.g. Coffee : png, or marxism:pdf)

Here’s a list of filetypes, incase you are not sure what filetype you might need.

Related sites

Type on the search-bar : Related: Site you want to see related sites to

(e.g. related : reddit.com, or related :stackoverflow.com)

tip: I find that having the “related” keyword in small caps makes finding similar sites much easier.

Specific result search

Now say you searching for something but want only certain details from the search as results. What do you do ?

Type on the search-bar : Thing you are searching for + the term you want the search to relate to.

(e.g. Morgan Freeman +movies, or Morgan Freeman +narrating)

tip: Do not leave a space after the plus sign

Omitting search result

Now say you searching for something but do not want certain details from the search as results. What do you do ?

Type on the search-bar : Thing you are searching for the term you do not want the search to relate to.

(e.g. joe rogan -stand up, or joe rogan -The Joe Rogan Experience)

Looking for a quote or saying?

Got a song stuck in your head or a saying which you not clear on it wording.

The asterisk * is your best friend.

(e.g. "wait till I * right")

tip: Be sure to add the phrase in quotation marks

Finding places close by

Looking for a close by coffee place to visit ?

Adding the term “nearby” at the end of the thing you want to search for will do the trick.

(e.g. Night Club nearby)

tip: Be sure to have your geo-location on the device switched on.

Current page is not available

Google crawls the web and takes snapshots of each page as a backup just in case the current page is not available. So should you come across an unavailable page.

Here’s what to do.

Search for images

Want a specific picture size of an image search result ?

Here’s the deal.

fig. 1
fig. 2

Searching within a site

So say you wanted to know about a particular topic but it’s covered on a particular site and you want to find out about that. Or want a topic covered by particular sites like education sites. Here is how you do it.

Type on the search-bar : Topic you searching for(aka. Search term) site: site

(e.g. oop site:raywenderlich.com, oop site:appcoda.com)

you can add the domain extension.

(e.g. oop site:.edu, monalisa site:.museum)

Limit results based on the date

Say you searching about a news event but want the latest report on the issue.

Here is how you do it.
